To the extent that early social responding is in part dependent upon basic sensory and attentional capabilities, one would expect various social anomalies among children with serious neurological abnormalities. It should be noted that the formation of maternal-infant attachment patterns does not require, in most species , a very high level of cognitive/intellectual functioning.

Disturbances or delays in such a fundamental process suggests basic attentionai , emotional, andJor cognitive deficits. There remains some debate about the exact nature of the disturbances in the mother-child interaction (Sigman & Ungerer , 1984). Moreover , the propensity of autistic children to become attached to inanimate objects would strongly argue against the view that these children are incapable of forming some types of social attachments , in childhood or later. Viewed from the perspective of persons who deal with the child (including the parents and other caretakers), the child's relative lack of responsiveness may itself promote further distance in relationships, and an unhappy cycle of increasing disengagement.
