Even denying the principle, in so far as it has any meaning whatsoever, must have a determinate content that is not undermined by simultaneously affirming the principle. So that is why contradictions must be avoided. How, then, can one hold to the supposed diversity of viewpoints while avoiding contradiction? This is where alethic relativism comes into its own, by denying that contradictions really occur in claiming that truth itself is a relative notion. So when you say “p” and I say “not-p”, the former is “true for you” and the latter is “true for me”.

Joseph Margolis develops a detailed relativistic position using the rejection of excluded middle as a minimal condition (Margolis 1991). He links this rejection to what he calls “cognitive intransparency”: we don’t really know a worldin-itself – the world is always mediated to us in historical and context-laden ways. As Margolis explains: 34 R E L AT I V I S M different investigators (located either synchronically or diachronically) are, on the available evidence, often unable to incorporate an adequate and coherent picture of one another’s conceptions within the terms of reference of their own.

Some philosophers have suggested dropping this requirement as a way of circumventing the problems with relativism. Instead of just two truth-values there may be three or more. This means dropping one of the classical laws of logic, the law of excluded middle, which states that there can be only two truthvalues, and no third value is given – tertium non datur . What might such a third value be? One standard answer is “indeterminate”. Other approaches suggest that there may be multiple values, for example “true”, “mostly true”, “mainly true”, “half true”, “mainly false”, “mostly false” and “false”.
