During early October, the fort was relocated at a point slightly northeast of its original site. During December 1862, Colonel Evans was succeeded by Captain Moses A. McLaughlin. Meanwhile, the threat of the Confederate sympathizers did not materialize to the point of threatening the garrison, despite there being more Confederate sympathizers than troops. A few minor incidents occurred, but the threat of retaliation seemed to have worked. Captain McLaughlin, during the following year, moved to Camp Independence to inform the Indians that they would have to relocate to Fort Tejon.

Subsequently, during 1907 the remains of the fallen troops were moved and reinterred in the land that became a cemetery. The graves are unmarked. The Confederate Cemetery is open to the public.
