This book should find a place as the first realistic text about female-to-male transsexual people. It should open eyes and doors; eyes that have not seen us, doors that have been closed to us, and doors that have been closed to the nontranssexual world. I expect this book will generate considerable discussion in the FTM community, in Gender Studies classrooms and journals, and among all men and women who think seriously about self-actualization, gender, sexuality, even spirituality. I hope this book heralds a period of dialogue between transsexual men and the nontranssexual world.

Furthermore, I found that gender blending females frequently were women whose lack of obvious femininity was apparently motivated by their desire to resist sexist stereotyping. They felt very woman-identified, and they were perplexed when their feelings led them to be mistaken for men. Gender Blending was my attempt to make sense of the phenomenon. Having finished that project to my satisfaction, I was ready to move on to new questions. At the time, it seemed a simple and logical step from there for me to ask about what is going on when females intentionally want to be seen and to live fully as men.

I’ve written about some of what I learned through my own transition and the subsequent years in Aaron H. Devor, “Learned Along the Way,” in Letters to My Brothers: Transitional Wisdom in Retrospect, eds. Megan Rohrer & Zander Keig (San Francisco, CA: Wilgefortis, 2010), (pp. 46–59). See also Aaron H.
