The classic locus for this is the Aristotelian dictum: ‘Spoken sounds are symbols of affections in the soul, and written marks symbols of spoken sounds’ (Aristotle 323 BCb: 43). The substance of the dictum has been frequently reiterated in subsequent discussions of language: for example, in the seventeenth century Bishop John Wilkins characterized alphabetic writing as ‘the picture or image of speech’ (Wilkins 1668:355). Influential twentieth-century linguistic texts have adopted a similar position to their precursors, in this respect.

Some forms of writing may never have been read to speech by their producers or immediately intended receivers, and their oral discourse may not have been given graphic correlates. These hints have been partially obscured by the alphabetical teleology which has characterized some historical studies of writing. A feature of writing which emerges as relatively constant from both synchronic and diachronic considerations is its graphic nature. It has no distinctive visual characteristics by which it can consistently be distinguished from other graphic forms, such as decoration (Harris 1986:16).

The issue cannot be fully explored in this context, but such an interpretation of the intentions of the devisers of alphabetic writing, as being primarily concerned with the transmission of messages over space, would accord with Vico’s view of alphabetic writing as intended for epistolary communication (Vico 1744:138–53). A valuable conclusion can be obtained from these diachronic indications of contrasts between speech and writing. Once freed from the retrospective projection of a Western literate consciousness formed by the experience of reading and Writing 31 transcription, the possibility of forms of writing radically independent of utterance emerges.
