Nevertheless, Mahler’s Phase 3 also lasts from approximately 5 months to 3 years. She considers the developmental tasks of the child during this time to be largely those of individuation, which she nicely calls “hatching,” consisting of: (i) differentiation of self from mother (differentiation subphase, 5–10 months); (ii) experiencing and practicing autonomy (practicing subphase, 10–16 months), (iii) the child’s increasing awareness of and concern about separation from the mother, and need to both maintain individuality and decrease the sense ATTACHMENT AND THE EMERGENCE OF SELF 41 of separation (rapprochement subphase, 16–24 months); and (iv) the development of a sense of selfhood and a stable, internalized representation of the caregiver, allowing for both a sense of individuality and connection (consolidation of individuality and object constancy subphase, 24–36 months).

These behavioral systems are activated by both internal stimuli, such as hormonal levels, and environmental stimuli, and the activation of a specific behavioral system results in the appearance of specific behaviors related to that system. This is an important distinction to make. Although, for instance, attachment behaviors are the product of the attachment behavioral system, they must not be mistaken for the system itself. Accordingly, the absence of the related behaviors does not signify the absence of the behavioral system.

As such, attachment is not the result of a psychological drive or a by-product resulting from the satiation of other needs, such as food or sex, but is in itself a primary physical drive in which security and safety are actively sought. Hence, if attachment needs are not met, then exploration behaviors will not ensue, except in unusual circumstances. In fact, it is the absence of attachment behaviors, coupled with other behaviors in an otherwise well-adjusted infant, that suggests secure attachment, rather than a display of attachment behaviors.
